Day 2.56: Chapel Hill, NC

We got up to an exciting brunch featuring homemade Israeli salad, Bruegger’s Bagels, and a few different kinds of lox and salmon.

After brunch, we set out for a walk in the woods around Chapel Hill, a regular feature of visits to see Bruce and Nancy. We saw some nice gardens near their home and the weather was very comfortable.

We left to drive to Raleigh, and found an ice cream place along the way so that we wouldn’t be too hungry between brunch and dinner. We couldn’t have been more thrilled with the place we discovered: Bruster’s. We were ecstatic to learn that there was a waffle bowl flight available for only $4.49 where you could get four reasonably-sized scoops! After many, many samples, we settled on Birthday Cake, Sea Salt Caramel, Mint Fudge Crunch, and Key Lime Pie (Arielle) and Banana Chocolate Chip, Cookie Craze (two scoops), and Death by Chocolate (Abe). Everything was delicious and we vowed to seek out Bruster’s all across the nation.

We drove a little bit further to see Jen, Abe’s friend from high school, her husband Zach, and their baby Amelia, who is nine months old. Our interest was piqued when we learned that they were selling their house to move to a bigger place nearby, and briefly considered moving there ourselves.

We spent a while there and then drove back to Chapel Hill, where we caught the very end of the Duke basketball game that they lost in overtime. We went out to dinner at Squid’s, which was delicious. We started with complimentary hush puppies for the table, which were pretty tasty. Abe got a terrific swordfish with spinach and mashed potatoes, and Arielle got breaded tilapia with French fries. We all shared crème brulée for dessert, and then stopped by the fancy new movie theater to check out the amenities. Back at home, we socialized a bit before getting to bed.
