Day 2.55: Durham, NC to Chapel Hill, NC

We woke up in time to walk to the nearby church where Beth El, which was under construction, was having Shabbat morning services. Services, which included a fiftieth anniversary celebration and an aufruf for an upcoming wedding, were very nice, and the highlight for Arielle was that there was coffee available outside the whole time. For everyone else, the highlight was Arielle speaking to the congregation about her work, which was followed up by an announcement from Rabbi Dan that she would be returning next March for a scholar-in-residence weekend! We met Rabbi Sager, the rabbi emeritus, who married Abe’s Uncle Bruce and Aunt Nancy. We stuck around for lunch and talked to a number of friendly congregants, and then we went to Rabbi Dan’s talk about his recent trip to the AIPAC Policy Conference. We walked back to the house, where we relaxed and then played Settlers of Catan with Ranon. Later in the afternoon, we went for a walk on the Duke campus with Rabbi Dan and his dog Delilah, and threw a Frisbee around with Rabbi Dan and Ranon. On the walk back, we got a great tour of the under-construction synagogue, which will likely be finished when we next return and should be quite a sight to behold. We hung out for a little bit at the house until Shabbat ended, when we packed up and said goodbye.

We drove about half an hour to Chapel Hill to the home of Abe’s Uncle Bruce and Aunt Nancy. We spent a while talking, watched some basketball, and then went to sleep.

Day 2.54: Durham, NC

We woke up to go meet Ethan, a former USY colleague of Abe’s who is now the assistant director of Duke Hillel, at Parker and Otis, a cool spot in downtown Durham. Arielle and I both got avocado toast, and Arielle asked for extra bread because they piled the avocado on so high (it was pretty good). Ethan’s bagel with lox also looked appetizing.

Our next stop was in Chapel Hill at Trader Joe’s so that we could buy kosher chicken to make for dinner, and we made quick stops at Harris Teeter and Whole Foods for additional ingredients like Bone Suckin’ Sauce and Duncan Hines brownie mix to make cookies. We met Ingrid, Arielle’s former two-up manager from J.P. Morgan, at American Tobacco Campus, a neat area back in Durham, for lunch. It was great to catch up and eat outside at Tyler’s Taproom, where Arielle got a pretzel and fried pickles, and Abe got a burger.

After lunch, we drove back to the Greyber home, where we did some work and then started cooking dinner. For Shabbat dinner, we made Bone Suckin’ Chicken, home fries, roasted Brussels sprouts, carrots, broccoli, fruit salad, and brownie cookies, which we enjoyed with Rabbi Dan and Ranon.

We talked for a bit about life in North Carolina and the importance of basketball before heading to bed.

Day 2.53: Columbia, SC to Durham, NC

We woke up and ate some Eggo waffles for breakfast with Miles and Betty before saying goodbye and thank you for their warm hospitality.

We drove a few minutes to Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia, where Arielle had a great meeting. Abe had received two birthday gifts from AMC but hadn’t had a chance to go see a movie in theaters aside from at film festivals, and so we found one that was only a few minutes off the road in Charlotte, just after we crossed into North Carolina. Abe went in a got a free large drink (Hi-C Fruit Punch) and a free large popcorn, and Arielle took the popcorn right back in after we dumped it out into the box we had gotten and some Ziploc bags for the free refill. Not a bad stop! We made lunch (peanut butter and banana sandwich for Abe, turkey sandwich for Arielle) and continued for the next two or so hours to Carrboro.

Our first stop was at the home of Dave and Sarah, Arielle’s cousins, and got to see their older son Max and meet their younger son Wes, who wasn’t born the last time we visited in 2014. We got to see their new house, which was beautiful, and had a great dinner with them, featuring penne with peas, onions, walnuts, asparagus, and parmesan cheese as well as a salad. We enjoyed catching up and laughed when Sarah insisted that Abe had recommended a movie to her back in 2014 but neither of them could figure out what it was (three hours later, she called after finally having figured it out).

We drove about thirty minutes to Durham, where we arrived at the home of the Greybers, who Arielle knew from when Rabbi Dan was an intern at her synagogue in Los Angeles years earlier. After unloading a lot of stuff, we spent some time talking to Jen, who was leaving the next morning for the weekend to visit Rutgers with her son Benjamin, who Arielle had babysat when she was much younger. When Rabbi Dan arrived home with his son Ranon, we talked to them for a bit and went to sleep soon after.
